What is chocolate cheesecake mousse?

Chocolate cheesecake mousse is smooth, creamy and well and truly hits the spot when you are craving chocolatey deliciousness. It contains both cream and cream cheese, hence being a cross between a cheesecake and a mousse.

Many traditional mousses use raw eggs that can be a health concern for children, older people, pregnant women and those who have compromised immune systems. However, this chocolate cheesecake mousse does not contain eggs, offering a safe alternative.

How difficult is it to make a chocolate cheesecake mousse?

Requiring just five ingredients and very little preparation, this chocolate cheesecake mousse will look and taste like you have been slaving away in the kitchen for hours when really, it takes just a few minutes to assemble. Better still, it needs no baking or cooking in any way. Once the ingredients have been combined, it just needs to be set in the fridge.

Six small glass containers on a white surface, each holding ingredients for chocolate cheesecake mousse: whipped cream, chocolate spread, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, sugar, and a white liquid (possibly milk).

Ingredients

1 cup whipping cream

1 cup whipped cream cheese

1/4 cup cocoa powder

1/2 cup Nutella

1 tsp vanilla extract

Optional toppings: Flaky Sea Salt, Berries/Berry Jam, Toasted Hazelnuts, Chocolate Shavings, Whipped Cream, Crushed Cookies or Chocolate Pearls.

Method

Put the whipping cream into a bowl and whisk until soft peaks form. Next, add the cream cheese and combine until smooth. Finally, put the Nutella and vanilla extract into the bowl, and sift in the cocoa powder. Whisk gently until it has the desired consistency. I prefer a stiff peak, but equally, you could leave it at soft peaks as it will harden a little in the refrigerator.

To assemble the dish, you can place the mixture into a piping bag and pipe it into a glass (allowing the layers to be seen) and then add some of the optional toppings, then repeat. For a more formal occasion, try using a swirly piping nozzle, as this will produce a more elegant result. Put in the refrigerator for at least two hours to set before serving. Alternatively, you could spoon the mixture gently into a ramekin and allow the other diners to choose their own toppings.
