The Story Behind Guacamole

Did you know the word “guacamole” comes from the Nahuatl word ahuacamolli, which means “avocado sauce”? Nahuatl is an indigenous language spoken in Mexico, where guacamole was first created over 500 years ago. Back then, it was a simple mix of mashed avocado, lime juice, and a pinch of salt or sugar.

Spanish explorers were so impressed by this creamy creation that they brought it back to Spain, and from there, it spread across the globe. Today, guacamole is one of the most loved appetisers worldwide – and it’s not just tasty, it’s packed with health benefits too.

Why Avocado is a Superfood

Avocados aren’t just delicious; they’re a nutritional powerhouse. Here’s why they’re so good for you:

  • Great for your heart: Avocados are full of healthy monounsaturated fats, which help lower “bad” LDL cholesterol and support heart health. Research from the American Heart Association even found that eating two avocados a week can reduce the risk of heart disease.
  • Nutrient-rich: Avocados are loaded with vitamins and minerals. They’ve got more potassium per gram than bananas, plus magnesium, copper, and vitamins C, E, K, and B – all essential for keeping your body healthy.
  • Supports digestion and glowing skin: High in fibre, avocados help with digestion and act as a natural prebiotic. Their antioxidants, like vitamins C and E, also promote healthy, radiant skin.
  • Boosts brain power: Thanks to lutein, a powerful antioxidant, avocados can improve brain health and protect your vision. Studies have even linked regular avocado consumption to better memory and sharper thinking, especially in older adults.
  • Weight-friendly: With their low sugar content and low glycaemic index, avocados help keep you feeling full and can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

  • 1 spring onion, finely chopped
  • 4 tablespoons of fresh coriander, finely chopped (save some for garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon of pickled ginger, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of brine from the jar of pickled ginger
  • 100g of pomegranate seeds (save some for garnish)

Optional garnish:

  • ½ avocado rose

For serving:

  • Tortilla chips

  2. Mash the avocado in a bowl with a fork. You can leave it chunky or make it smooth, depending on how you like it.
  3. Add the lime juice and zest, crushed red pepper, grated garlic, spring onion, coriander, pickled ginger, and the brine. Mix everything together until well combined.
  4. Gently fold in the pomegranate seeds, saving a few for garnish. Season with sea salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Spoon the guacamole into a serving bowl. Garnish with fresh coriander, the reserved pomegranate seeds, and, if you’re feeling fancy, an avocado rose.
  6. Serve with tortilla chips on the side and enjoy!
